Today I am announcing that I’ve hung my own shingle. Think Bright Marketing.
Given the focus on digital marketing, I propose that we rethink the old saying, “hung a shingle” and instead use “launched the website.”
The phrase dates back to the early 1800’s, has traditionally been reserved for lawyers and doctors. When starting their own practice, they would take a shingle from their roof, or purchase a new shingle, write their name on it (John Smith, Attorney at Law) and hang it outside their office space. Hence the term hang a shingle.
Over time this term has been adopted to cover all types of professional services. As we’ve transitioned to a digital society, the new “shingle” is a website.
So, as I embark on this new journey, please keep me in mind should you, a friend, or colleague hang your own shingle, or need marketing services.
